Tip For Bowling Coaches

Tip For Bowling Coaches....Can You Hear Me Now?

Sometimes the "truths" learned about teaching and coaching come from some very non-bowling sources. For example, take the Verizon Wireless Ad. The Verizon Wireless technician travels to various locations and test the communication system's effectiveness with the words "Can you hear me now?" A fabulous question coaches should be asking themselves. To answer that question a coach must evaluate the parts. Do I have a communication system in place with my student? Do I have the student on the same network? Do I stay within my minute allotment? Do I have more dropped calls than clear communication?

Good communication is a key factor in good teaching. A coach who communicates clearly and precisely with a student obtains results faster than one who garbles the message. Like the Verizon technician, a good coach runs a system's check periodically to identify caused of missed communication. So listen to yourself teach and ask yourself a few questions. Do I have the technical information for the message I am trying to send? Do I have an up to date teaching toolbox to select the correct method and strategy to send the message? Do I use "teaching shorthand" to be quickly effective? Do I simply state the obvious or do I tell them what I want them to do to improve?

What do you do if you find your communication system is outdated or ineffective? Upgrade! If your technical knowledge system is tired, then rewire. If you educational tools are dull, then sharpen. If you're going over your allotted minutes, use speed dial. If you are dropping most calls, change the network. Upgrades are available in many packages through the USBC Coaching Program and IBPSIA.

For clear lines of communication with a student, a coach must: have the message accurate, deliver it in an appropriate manner, and do it efficiently.

Test Your System

Positive Charge: Communication disconnects often occur when negativity surrounds the message. Change these oft-heard negative instructions into positives.

1. Don't rush to the foul line.

2. Don' swing the ball behind your back.

Enhance Communication: Error identification is an integral part of the teaching process, but it is not a substitute for instruction. Don't be Captain Obvious. Below is the error identification. Now add the positive and constructive instruction.

1. You did not release the ball.

2. You missed your mark.

Speed Dial: Longer explanations may be necessary when introducing a skill, but they are a hindrance for daily practice and competition warm-up. A shorthand reminder or a speed dial link should be established between coach and student. Identify the speed dial that would be appropriate for the following longer instruction.

1. An explanation of true body lean using a pencil as the analogy.

2. "Let it go!"
